Vier Jahre nach seinem Album „Can You Smell The Rain“ legt der in Bonn lebende Sänger und Multiinstrumentalist Nils Kercher mit „Open Windows“ einen Song nach, der so komplex und vielfältig ist wie ein ganzes Album. Kercher war seit jeher ein Grenzgänger, der verschiedenste ethnische und topografische Ingredienzien zu einem höchst persönlichen Idiom zusammenzieht. In „Open Windows“ geht er nun einen Schritt weiter, denn das mit dem Weltreinlassen ist nicht einfach so dahingesagt. Kercher befreit sich nicht nur von allen Genres und weltmusikalischen Zuordnungen, in knapp acht Minuten (Radio Edit: 4 Min) gelingt ihm ein eindringliches holistisches Statement.

Im Klang hebt er alle Barrieren zwischen seinen mannigfachen musikalischen Einflüssen auf, während es im Text von Kira Kaipainen, Kerchers langjähriger Duopartnerin, eben um den Dreiklang von Mensch, Umwelt, Atmosphäre geht. Von seinem Hauptinstrument, der afrikanischen Harfe Kora kommend, spielt Kercher in „Open Windows“ ein ganzes Arsenal von Instrumenten von Gitarre und akustischem Bass über das Balafon, einen westafrikanischen Cousin des Xylofons, und Perkussionsinstrumente unterschiedlichster Provenienz bis hin zu einer gezupften und gestrichenen Violine. Abgerundet wird dieses Soundgeflecht durch zwei Celli und insgesamt 17 Gesangsspuren.

„Open Windows“ zeigt, dass Nils Kercher nicht nur ein musikalischer Visionär ist, sondern

Four years after his album „Can You Smell The Rain“ singer and multi-instrumentalist Nils Kercher releases „Open Windows“, a song as complex and diverse as an entire album. Kercher has always been a pioneer in crossing borders, fusing diverse ethnic and topographical ingredients into a highly personal idiom. In ‘Open Windows’, he now takes this to the next level. His idea of letting the world in is not just an off-handed phrase. Kercher not only frees himself from all genres and world music categorisations, in almost eight minutes (radio edit: 4 min) he succeeds in making a compelling holistic statement.

In sonic language, he removes all barriers between his manifold musical influences, while the lyrics by Kira Kaipainen, Kercher’s long-time duo partner, deal with the triphony of man, environment and atmosphere. Clouds, oceans and mountain ranges are transmuted from our shared external world into the DNA of each and every one of us. This track envelopes the globe like a protective film and opens up new perspectives. Music and lyrics combine to reveal a journey around the world full of snapshots, anticipatory memories and unexpected sparkles on the horizon.

Coming from his main instrument, the African harp kora, in ‘Open Windows’ Kercher layers a whole arsenal of instruments from guitar and acoustic bass to the balafon, a West African cousin of the xylophone, and percussion instruments of the most diverse provenance to a plucked and bowed violin. This tapestry of sound is rounded off by two cellos and a total of 17 vocal tracks.
