Mit RUN THE DARKNESS WILL COME veröffentlicht die aktuelle DAY & TAXI Besetzung mit Bassist Silvan Jeger (seit 2014) und Gerry Hemingway (seit 2018) am Schlagzeug ihre 2. Studioproduktion als CD. Die Musik wurde am 25. und 26. Juni 2021 aufgenommen.(english below)

Die Band beschreibt ihre Musik folgendermassen: Unbeeindruckt von Trends bewegt sich DAY & TAXI autonom und unverkennbar an der Schnittstelle von Komposition und Improvisation. DAY & TAXI spielt zeitgenössische Musik, die sich der Vergangenheit bewusst ist, die Gegenwart wahrnimmt und die Zukunft anvisiert.

Die Musik – experimentell und einschliessend – wird von Christoph Gallio komponiert und von allen Beteiligten gemeinsam in die jeweilige Form gebracht. Die Kompositionen können auch als Skulpt ren gesehen werden.

Stilistische Heterogenität, Zufall, Minimalismen, Alltäglichkeit, Poesie, Humor und auch Künstlichkeit in Form von Sentimentalitäten werden zugelassen. Der gelassene Umgang damit prägt den einzigartigen DAY & TAXI-Sound, der die individuellen Qualitäten der Mitspieler vereint und aufleben lässt.

Der Deutsche Jazzpublizist Bert Noglik schreibt 2017: … eine sehr starke, auch emotional anrührende Musik.

Wie auf dem Vorgänger DEVOTION beinhaltet dieser Tonträger – neben ausgeschriebenen Miniaturen und längeren Stücken mit verschiedensten und improvisierten Inhalten – auch „Songs“, die vom Bassisten Jeger gesungen werden.
Diesmal mit Texten in Englischer und Deutscher Sprache. Sie sta men von den Deutschen Schriftstellern Thorsten Krämer (1971) und Markus Stegmann (1962), den Schweizer Lyrikern Renato P. Arlati (1936 – 2005) und Werner Lutz (1930 – 2016) und dem Amerikanischem Poeten Steve Delachinsky (1946 – 2019).

Und wie immer gibt es einen bunten Straus an Widmungen. Die mal für Jean-Luc Godard, Corinne Güdemann, Walter Zimmermann, Robert Filliou, Kip Hanrahan, Dominik Steiger und Jack Bruce.

DAY & TAXI wurde 1988 mit dem Saxophonisten Urs Blöchlinger (1954 – 1995) als Quartett gegründet und wird seit 1989 als Trio von Christoph Gallio geführt.

Der in Baden, Schweiz, wohnhafte Christoph Gallio (*1957) studierte klassisches Saxophon bei Iwan Roth am Konservatorium Basel und Musik bei Steve Lacy in Paris. 2012 Master of Arts (MA) in Transdisziplinarität an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK). Erhielt 1987 den Aktionskunstpreis der Stadt Basel, 2009 das Berliner Atelier, 2012 ein Werkbeitrag des Kantons Aargau, 2017 das Atelierstipendium der Stadt Baden in Buenas Aires und 2022 das Londoner Atelier des Kantons Aargau. Gallio bewegt sich seit 1977 eigenwillig zwischen improvisierter und komponierter Musik. Neben anderen eigenen Projekten tourte er mit DAY & TAXI in Kanada, Japan, Russland, China, Zentralasien, in Europa, den USA und der Schweiz. Seit 1986 führt er sein eigenes Label PERCASO.

Bassist Silvan Jeger (*1985) lebt in Zürich. Als Kind erhielt er Cellounterricht und spielte in seiner Jugend E-Bass und sang in Punkbands. 2005 bis 2010 Bachelor- und Masterstudium des Jazz-Kontrabasses an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste bei Dominique Girod und Heiri Känzig sowie Unterricht in Interfaces/Softwareprogrammierung, Cello und Gesang. 2020 Master of Arts (MA) in Transdisziplinarität an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK). Neben der Konzerttätigkeit als Kontrabassist, Auftritte als Sänger, Gitarrist, Cellist, E-Bassist und Bediener diverser elektronischer Geräte

Schlagzeuger Gerry Hemingway (*1955) ist seit 1974 als Komponist und Solist tätig und tritt mit verschiedenen Ensembles auf. Seit Mitte der 80er Jahre leitete er eine Reihe von Quartetten und Quintetten. Gerry Hemingway ist Guggenheim Fellow und erhielt sowie in zahlreiche Aufträge für Kammer- und Orchestermusik. Auch als Songwriter machte er sich einen Namen u.a. durch die Zusammenarbeit mit John Cale. Elf Jahre spielte er im Anthony Braxton Quartett. Gegenwärtig lebt er in Luzern und unterrichtet seit 2009 an der Hochschule Luzern.

With RUN THE DARKNESS WILL COME the current DAY & TAXI line-up with bassist Silvan Jeger (since 2014) and Gerry Hemingway (since 2018) on drums releases their 2nd studio production as CD. The music was recorded on June 25 and 26, 2021.
The band describes their music as follows: Unimpressed by trends, DAY & TAXI moves autonomously and unmistakably at the intersection of composition and improvisation. DAY & TAXI plays contemporary music that is aware of the past, perceives the present and aims at the future.
The music – experimental and inclusive – is composed by Christoph Gallio and brought into the respective form by all participants together. The compositions can also be seen as sculptures. Stylistic heterogeneity, coincidence, minimalisms, ordinariness, poetry, humor and also artificiality in the form of sentimentality are allowed. The relaxed handling of this characterizes the unique DAY & TAXI sound, which unites and brings to life the individual qualities of the players.
The German jazz journalist Bert Noglik wrote in 2017: … a very strong, also emotionally touching music.
As on its predecessor DEVOTION, this recording includes – in addition to written-out miniatures and longer pieces with a wide variety of and improvised content – „songs“ sung by bassist Jeger. This time with lyrics in English and German. They come from the German writers Thorsten Krämer (1971) and Markus Stegmann (1962), the Swiss poets Renato P. Bassist Silvan Jeger (*1985) lives in Zurich. As a child he received cello lessons and in his youth he played electric bass and sang in punk bands. 2005 to 2010 Bachelor and Master studies of Jazz Double Bass at the Zurich University of the Arts with Dominique Girod and Heiri Känzig as well as lessons in Interfaces/Software Programming, Cello and Singing. 2020 Master of Arts (MA) in Transdisciplinarity at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). In addition to performing as a double bassist, performs as a singer, guitarist, cellist, electric bassist, and operator of various electronic devices.
Drummer Gerry Hemingway (*1955) has been active as a composer and soloist since 1974, performing with various ensembles. He has led a number of quartets and quintets since the mid-1980s. Gerry Hemingway is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received as well as in numerous commissions for chamber and orchestral music. He has also made a name for himself as a songwriter, including collaborations with John Cale. For eleven years he played in the Anthony Braxton Quartet. He currently lives in Lucerne and has been teaching at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2009.
