Ein Projekt mit vier Gitarren?! Das kann Angst machen. Die wüstesten Rockbands hatten maximal drei Gitarren und die vierte musste eben zum Bass wechseln. Ein mutiges Projekt also, das Peter Weiss sich da ausgedacht hat.

Und was soll man sagen: es ist ein Riesenspaß. Kein sinnloses Noodeling, kein Posing oder sonstiges Guck-mal-wie-schnell- ich-bin. Großartig sind die Duos mit jeweils einem bzw. einer der »Six-String-People« und Peter. Von monkisch über skandinavisch anmutenden Weiten, von Tom Waits bis Ornette, jedes so unterschiedlich, so eigen wie die ProtagonistInnen selber. Auch diverse andere Melangen sind zu genießen und immer hört man, wer wo wie und was spielt, immer erkennt man den- oder diejenige!

Peter Weiss gehört zum deutschen Jazz-Adel, er ist ein Trommler der alten Garde, wie man so schön sagt. Sein Ride-Becken (und was er damit macht) gehört nach wie vor zur Ersten Liga der Jazz- Drummer. Er hält das ganze Projekt zusammen, ist quasi die große Klammer drum herum. Understated aber keinesfalls unterkühlt. Immer banddienlich und besonders stark bei den loosen, ternären Grooves.

Und obwohl jede/r Songs zur CD beigetragen hat, wirkt das Projekt nicht willkürlich zusammen gewürfelt. Wie eine richtige Band eben.

Sehr schön treffend ist auch der Titel der CD und der wird wunderbar eingelöst, eine Konversation mit Sechs-Saiten-Menschen.

Er hat sich was getraut, der Peter Weiss! Und versammelt hier die Creme de la Creme an Jazz-GitarristInnen Deutschlands.

A project with four guitars?! That could be frightening. The wildest rock bands performed with three guitars at the most, consequently the fourth one had to change to the electric bass. It really is a very bold project that Peter Weiss has devised.

But what can one say: it is extreme fun. No superfluous playing, no posing or demonstrations of the kind of »let’s see how fast I can play«. There are striking duets of Peter playing with some of the six-string-people, which evoke Monkian moods or Scandinavian melancholy and make you think of Tom Waits or Ornette, each being as individual as the protagonists themselves. And of course you will enjoy the music of the other combinations and identify who is playing in these tunes!

Peter is a member of Germany’s jazz elite, a drummer of the »old school«, as people say. Especially the way he plays the ride cymbal has established his rank in the premier league of jazz drumming. He keeps the whole project together, he connects everything. You can describe his playing as being controlled but never reserved. It makes the other players sound good, particularly in relaxed and swinging compositions. If you need a first approach to the CD I can recommend, apart from the duo recordings, Snake and Philly Ray, the latter being a very nice composition by Philipp van Endert.

Of course each tune contributes to the whole of the CD, it never sounds oddly assorted. As a matter of fact, it makes one think that you listen to a real band.

The title of the CD really refers to its contents: a conversation with people playing six strings. Peter really dared something here. And combined the crème de la crème of german guitar players in this unique and outstanding recording.
